MarineMax Orlando is conducting a school-supply drive for students in Florida’s Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties.
The drive will support A Gift For Teaching (AGFT) and Pencil Boy Express, which provide free school supplies to teachers and students.
Between August 15 and September 15, MarineMax Orlando will collect school supplies or cash donations and deliver them to the AGFT.
“The crew at MarineMax Orlando, many of whom have children that attend public schools in this area, want to support the kids that, through no fault of their own, start the school year without the tools to get ahead,” MarineMax Orlando manager Bryan Douglas said in a statement. “Through A Gift For Teaching, we are able to support the real heroes, the teachers, and give a little back to our community.”
Last year’s drive was marked a success as donors filled two boats with over 100,000 school items for local students. Highest on the want list this year are colored pencils, markers, crayons, loose leaf paper, and glue sticks/bottles.
More than 60 percent, nearly 190,000, of the students in Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties are from families that can’t afford lunch or school supplies. More than 13,000 of these children are homeless.
Of the 338 schools in the three counties, 207 are designated high need.
