A cute little video attributes the origins of Big Major’s swimming pigs to shipwrecks or even pirates, but anyone who’s been to the Bahamas knows better. The cruising community has been feeding the pigs for decades but the population stays about the same, unlike the iguanas of Allan Cay, which have multiplied.
Could it be that Bahamians don’t care that much for iguana meat anymore? And could it be that Allan Cay is not a half mile away from a Bahamian settlement, like Staniel Cay is to Big Major’s?
Yes pigs have always had the ability to swim, but beware. They’re not really playful, just hungry. And they’ll attack your dog, so leave the dogs on board when you dinghy in to feed the pigs.
Anyway, enjoy the video, even if the crusty old narrator is pulling our leg.
