It’s amazing what can happen when people pull together for the good of the community. A great example is the historic Thea Foss Waterway in Tacoma, WA. What was once a toxic, polluted area that no one wanted anything to do with, has become a beautiful amenity in a city that, in my mind, is going to be the next “great place” to live or visit in the Pacific Northwest. Government, businesses, and locals all pulled together to restore this attractive urban environment, right next to the water, for the entire community!
This past weekend, Sam and I were invited to the first annual YachtoberFest on the Foss Waterway promenade, adjacent to the Museum of Glass and the Washington Historical Museum. It’s a traditional Octoberfest celebration, but because of its proximity to these great new marina facilities, it’s officially called “YachtoberFest.” The organizers asked us to get the word out to Northwest boaters that the party was “a-brewin,” and, once again, our fans responded. We were rewarded with amazing weather, craft beers, German food, live music, and great fellowship all day on Saturday. And, of course, The Boat Guy hosted a special Friday Night Party for those who bought moorage for the whole weekend.
Hundreds of people from the area came down to be part of YachtoberFest and to take advantage of the summer-like weather. Besides the festivities, eateries and unique shops were just steps away in Tacoma’s restored downtown district. And, those of us on boats, simply came and went as we pleased. (On a side note: I really loved a place called Harmon Brewery. Great food, nice people… and beer!)
The Friday party was really fun and we met some special folks. We gave away dinners at Palisades, free fuel and moorage at Elliot Bay Marina, gift bags from BMW of Seattle, and more! Old friends from our Winter Rendezvous in Poulsbo were reunited and new friendships were made with the people we met at Yachtoberfest.
I just really appreciate The Boat Guy community of fun-loving, helpful, good-natured boaters that join in our events and enjoy a good time! It’s a great vibe created by great people.

So, the first annual YachtoberFest is in the books. It was a smashing success! It kind of had to be with fun people, sunny weather, delicious food, live music… and boats. I guess there’s not much left to say. Oh wait, yes there is… WEINERS!
