A plan to build a large marina complex on Coral Bay in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, is advancing despite opposition by the island’s residents.
The Summer’s End Yacht Club at the St. John Marina, as named by the Summer’s End Group, would have 145 slips in Coral Harbor as well as 12 mooring balls and an additional 75 moorings overseen by a public-private V.I. Department of Planning and Natural Resources.
In October, St. John Coastal Zone Management Committee approved a permit for the project, even though 160 residents had written letters arguing that the scale of the project was too big and that it would destroy the character of Coral Bay.
Since then, two organizations have appealed the decision. According to the Virgin Islands Times, the V.I. Conservation Society and the Moravian Church at Coral Bay have appealed. The church has reiterated longtime plans to build its own, smaller marina in the bay.
