Eric and Kim Paulson have spent the last few years blissfully exploring the Pacific coast of Mexico and Central America onboard their 1968 Grand Banks 42 Classic, Splinters.

When we caught up with them for this podcast, the couple were in a small harbor in El Salvador, enjoying the delicious local cuisine and coffee and planning their exit from a tricky, bar-protected harbor. Costa Rica was the next stop. They had no schedule and no itinerary, except to enjoy themselves by taking in the rich culture of the places they visit.

It’s a long way from the landlocked barn where the couple’s herculean efforts gave the 42 a second chance at a seagoing life.

When they found Splinters, she was languishing on the hard in southern California, neglected and heading for the scrap heap. They saw her potential and made a deal to purchase her.

Then the real work began, starting with a 1,000-mile haul to their home in Colorado where, over a decade, Splinters was lovingly restored in a barn on their property. She hit the brine a few years ago in San Diego and began her new life on the brine.
