One of the many attributes of the America’s Great Loop Cruisers’ Association that we find to be essential is how the association onboards new members. So, the Trawler Talk team set a goal for a future podcast: Find someone who was planning on embarking on the Great Loop for the first time.

Our next guests, April and Rio DeGennaro, are that couple. Just a few years back, they had never heard of the Great Loop and were satisfied cruising on lakes and rivers in their 20-footer.

But like many people, when they started to plan for retirement after busy careers, boating moved near the top of the list. Our conversation starts with them meeting at the bottom of the world, life in Hawaii and in the Southeast U.S., and hearing about the amazing American adventure that is the Great Loop.

The couple then embarked on a multi-year and multi-trip undertaking to learn all they can, attending several AGLCA events and spent significant time finding the right boat for their travels. They plan on casting off lines in spring, 2024.
