James Waters is a tech entrepreneur that grew up sailing and fishing on smaller boats.

After his software startup was acquired, him and his wife had some time on their hands and they took full advantage, with lots of fishing and cruising on center consoles.

Right around that time, they were in the process of buying a Nordhavn 63 and learned that it was too big of a jump for nearly all the insurance companies.

But the desire to learn the myriad systems found on most passagemakers didn’t go away, so they pivoted with the purchase of a 58-foot sport cruiser that had a great deal of these systems onboard.

Over the next few years they “built their boating resume” with extensive cruising on the East Coast and Bahamas, and even took on a large chunk of the Great Loop to prepare themselves for a future life as liveaboards, with the goal of venturing well beyond the reef.

As a software engineer, James offers an excellent perspective of all they’ve learned, what is proven to be integral onboard and dives into how AI and machine learning have made navigation ever than ever.
