Coast Guard Cutter Hawser and Bollard were breaking up ice on the Connecticut River near Essex this week. The river is choked with ice floes in some spots. Bollard and Hawser are both 65-foot small harbor tugs used primarily for domestic ice breaking along the East Coast of the United States.
Fortunately New Englanders tend to haul their boats and floating docks unless they are situated in sheltered areas such as coves or behind headlands. Even so there may be some damage to marine infrastructure when all is said and done.
