The Navy, Coast Guard and good Samaritan boaters teamed up last week to rescue two people from a burning boat about 17 miles west of Point Loma, Calif.
The Coast Guard received a report July 29 that a fire had struck the 45-foot boat Happy II.
The Coast Guard issued an urgent marine information broadcast to alert mariners of the boat fire, diverted an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and launched a 45-foot response boat from Station San Diego.
The USS Green Bay, which was operating in the area, responded to the fire and launched a RIB with a rescue and assistance team. The team took one of the passengers aboard their boat and was able to extinguish the fire.
Nearby boaters aboard the Allison Grace also responded and took the other passenger aboard their boat.
Both people were transferred to the Coast Guard’s response boat and taken back to San Diego. No injuries were reported.
