It’s been exactly one year since Helmsman Trawlers took home the trophy as the People’s Choice at TrawlerFest Seattle 2019. As the dates of this year’s Seattle installment of our popular TrawlerFest series came and went—the show having been postponed until November due to the Covid-19 pandemic—naturally, one of my first calls as editor-in-chief of Passagemaker was to Helmsman founder Scott Helker, situated in the country’s first hotspot, Seattle.

Knowing that his boats are constructed in China, ground zero for Covid-19, I was concerned about what effect the pandemic might have had on the Helmsman brand’s production side of things. According to Helker, who joins me in the interview below from aboard one of his most popular models, the Helmsman 38, the prognosis for Helmsman—and likely other Chinese-manufactured boat brands—is good.

And we’re darn glad to hear it.
