Many of us can’t wait to arrive to the early 2009 shows and check out what’s new. John gives us a preview of what we’ll be seeing at the Seattle Show and Stuart Trawler Fest.

For those of you who have been waiting through the fall and early winter to see what new models will be launched at the Seattle Boat Show and at Trawler Fest in Stuart, Florida, January is going to be a very good month indeed. Seattle will see the debut of the Northwest 50, Ocean Alexander 54M Classicco, Ranger Tugs 29, and Selene 66 Ocean Trawler. And Trawler Fest attendees in Stuart will get the insider’s first look at Kadey-Krogen’s highly anticipated Krogen 55 Expedition before its formal debut at the Miami International Boat Show in February. We’ve gleaned some early details from these five forward-looking builders, and are as anxious to see them up close and personal as you must be.

Kadey-Krogen 55 Expedition

Thirty years of experience building liveaboard distance-cruising trawler yachts laid the foundation for the new Kadey-Krogen 55 Expedition, a handsome passagemaker with an elevated pilothouse for outstanding visibility, and a high freeboard with a rakish stem forward to handle big seas. A centerline stairway in the Portuguese bridge, which features two wing throttle-and-thruster control stations, leads down from the pilothouse and boat deck level to the foredeck. An interior stairway leads down from the pilothouse to the main deck, where the saloon, galley, dinette and office are all located on a single level for convenience, with easy access to the aft deck. A large Freeman two-panel, welded watertight door and sizeable window connect the saloon with the well-protected aft deck, which has high bulwarks and a full-length overhead formed by the boat deck extension. Powder-coated Pacific Coast Marine aluminum windows, five fixed and 13 sliding, bathe the interior with loads of natural light and ventilation. Kadey-Krogen’s designers tapped American Bow Thruster for TRAC 250 stabilizers and a 22hp bow thruster, both hydraulic and both driven by the PTO on the standard 16kW Northern Lights generator. Range at 6 knots is a whopping 7,100nm, made possible by the reliable twin 158hp John Deere 6068iTFM M1 Tier 2 diesels. The pilothouse has twin Stidd helm chairs, a watch settee with table that converts to a double berth, a refrigerator/icemaker, and an inventory of controls, consoles, and storage that will satisfy the most demanding owner. Granite countertops and top-drawer stainless steel appliances from Jen-Air, GE, Miele, and Viking combine to make the galley an inviting, efficient space in which to prepare meals.

Northwest 50

Built in the Anacortes, Washington area, the NW50 has been Designed and built to meet the demanding, sometime rugged conditions of Pacific Northwest waters, the Northwest 50 is the newest trawler to join Northwest Trawlers owner Peter Whiting’s lineup which includes the capable NW45 launched last year and a new NW55 already on the boards. With its single 375hp John Deere diesel, the NW50 will deliver exceptional fuel economy for distance cruising, and higher speeds when it is necessary to navigate in high velocity current conditions, beat the weather, or make port before dark. For close quarters maneuvering in crowded marinas and docks, an articulating rudder and bow thruster makes the NW50 very nimble in tight situations. The NW50 has an extensive list of standard features, including bow thruster, generator/inverter, anchor and windlass, cork flooring, and washer/dryer, as well as available custom options. In fact, the owner of hull number one is an avid fisherman and has specified four monitors and full controls mounted on the aft saloon bulkhead for complete situational awareness and boat control when angling from the aft deck. The upper deck will feature the original pilothouse/flybridge arrangement, and an extended boat deck for all the toys. The mast can be hinged for Great Loopers who need proper bridge clearance.

Ocean Alexander 54M Classicco

The newest member of the Classicco series from Ocean Alexander features a proprietary bulbous bow design that is precisely shaped to improve performance and range at displacement and semi-displacement speeds. This new passagemaker has a unique seating arrangement at the Portuguese bridge, full walk-around side decks that are covered from amidships to the aft deck, and an extended boat deck to make the aft deck more usable. There are several flybridge treatments, with or without hardtops, as well as three different saloon layouts to suit your cruising lifestyle. A single 300-hp John Deere diesel is standard, with engine options in single and twin configurations from Deere and Caterpillar. Twin Stidd Slimline Ultraleather helm seats in the pilothouse and twin Pompanette helm seats on the flybridge add comfort for the long haul. Standard equipment includes 13hp bow and stern thrusters for improved low speed handling and hydraulic stabilizers for open water comfort. A Steelhead 1,000-pound capacity hydraulic davit will take the work out of dinghy launch and retrieval. Teak is used throughout the interior, from the natural teak and holly flooring used in the pilothouse, galley, saloon and heads, to the bulkheads and built in furniture, to the weather decks aft and along the sides. The galley features top-flight appliances from SubZero, Gaggenau, and GE for those who appreciate quality and efficiency.

Ranger Tugs 29

Following in the wake of the popular Ranger Tugs 25, the new R29 advances the concept of a trailerable tug with more features, living space, and standard equipment. Its large swim platform, spacious cockpit and usable side decks make docking and anchoring easier. The single 260hp Yanmar diesel offers a wide range of cruising speeds and a 20-knot flank speed. Standard bow and stern thrusters take the worry out of docking a single-screw vessel. The raised helm has companion seating and good sightlines, plus an opening starboard door for quick access to the bow and the Lewmar 1000 SS windlass. A VHF radio, Garmin 5215 chart plotter/radar, electronic throttle/shifter, controls for the hydraulic trim tabs, compass, and remote control spotlight are standard at the helm. Two private staterooms sleep four in comfort, plus two more on the convertible dinette in a pinch. For entertaining or mealtimes, the galley has a three-burner electric cooktop, microwave/convection oven, a 12-volt DC refrigerator, and six-bottle wine cooler. Five screened opening hatches in the pilothouse roof and sliding screened side windows promote natural ventilation and, while a cabin heater is standard, Ranger Tugs offers optional air conditioning or a forced-air diesel furnace.

Selene 66 Ocean Trawler

Selene’s all-new 66 Ocean Trawler makes its North American debut at the 2009 January Seattle Boat Show. Specifically designed for the cruising couple that wants to explore the world, this world passagemaker is equipped to keep those aboard comfortable and safe. A variety of interior space layout options offers owners unique and personal design features that add comfort and convenience to fit their distinct cruising lifestyle. The model slated for the Seattle Boat Show features a “galley up” arrangement on the pilothouse level, creating room for a formal dining area ahead of the saloon. The accommodation level offers four distinct staterooms for the comfort and relaxation of owners and guests. For those instances when having crew aboard makes sense, there are crew quarters with a captain’s berth and office spaces. There is a unique convertible aft deck enclosure option, leaving it open when the weather is appropriate, or enclosed for a virtual expansion of the saloon. The twin-engine diesel power package features a double skeg-keel configuration to protect the running gear. The engines will cruise the vessel extremely economically at low throttle settings, yet provide the ability to power up to catch a tide or outrun a storm. An improved bulbous bow design adds to the hulls efficiency and to her impressive seakeeping ability.
In addition to the new 66, Selene Seattle will present three other new Selene Ocean Trawlers at the show: the Wide Body 59, the new Deep Hull 48, and a new 43 with amidships-master 43.
