Furuno has taken a leap forward with artificial intelligence in its NavNet TZtouchXL series of multifunction displays. The series combines video technology, an intuitive user interface and enhanced navigation capabilities—most notably, AI-driven routing and hazard avoidance.
These multifunction displays have a clarity of TZ Maps cartography that is unmatched in its ability to mimic the appearance and detail in raster charts while remaining fully vector. Users can add custom depth color shading and bathymetric data overlays for even more detail.
The heart of this new series is the melding of TZ Maps and AI routing, a synergistic combination that transforms route planning and management into a seamless, time-efficient process. The AI-enhanced routing algorithm considers draft, navigational hazards and real-time ambient conditions to determine the safest, most efficient routes. This approach not only enhances vessel safety but also optimizes fuel efficiency, minimizes time underway, and allows the vessel’s operator to focus on enjoying the passage.
TZ Maps also offers a wealth of customization options. Whether a skipper prefers detailed coastal charts, high-resolution satellite imagery or precise bathymetric data, TZ Maps allows the display to be tailored. The ability to download and update map data on the fly ensures that skippers always have access to the most accurate and up-to-date information too.
When combined with a Furuno DRS radar, the NavNet TZtouchXL series unlocks two additional safety features: Risk Visualizer and AI Avoidance Route.
The Risk Visualizer provides a 360-degree view of collision risks, allowing skippers to mitigate hazards before they become a threat. Unlike traditional collision avoidance systems, which only consider objects along a course, Risk Visualizer evaluates all surrounding obstacles and hazards.
AI Avoidance Route calculates and recommends the safest routes around charted hazards. By integrating real-time radar data with predictive AI algorithms, these units make it possible to navigate with confidence in congested or otherwise challenging surroundings and conditions. With a tap on the screen, skippers can transmit a recommended route to an integrated Furuno autopilot.
Remote Operational Control
In addition to advanced navigation capabilities, the NavNet TZtouchXL series also offers superior operational convenience and optional remote controls. These ergonomic controllers provide intuitive access to all MFD functions, including edge-swiping functionality for hassle-free navigation in open water. Indeed, whether at the helm navigation center or keeping a more relaxed watch on deck, these remote controls allow you stay connected and in control of your vessel’s navigation and directional systems.
Marine navigation is one area that, to my mind, benefits immensely from integration with AI. Furuno’s NavNet TZtouchXL series represents a quantum leap forward in that space, setting a new standard for excellence in electronic navigation.
