No not those kitschy collectible figurines at your grandmother’s house. Our Jeff Hummel is one of the world’s leading experts in PC based navigation and marine electronics in general, and we have just added two seminars of his to the lineup at TrawlerFest-Riviera Beach.
Okay, okay…they’re not really gifts because you have to pay to get in, but they are a value nonetheless. TrawlerFest in Florida is Jan. 26-31 at the Riviera Beach Municipal Marina.
One is “NMEA 2000 for Cruisers” about the new networking standard. The other is “Cruise Planning and Under Way With PC Navigation.”
In 1995 Hummel joined Nobeltec and was instrumental pioneering new technology and products using radar images overlaid on an electronic chart, a feature that has revolutionized radar usage. Hummel works closely with NOAA and has spoken on their behalf at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London. He is also involved with the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) where he helps to guide the process of creating new standards for future generations of boaters, such as the new OneNet standard.
In 2004 Hummel joined forces with Brad Christian, a retired Microsoft developer and founder of Rose Point Navigation Systems. Rose Point’s hallmark quality and reliability have made it one of the most popular brand in the US market.
Besides being contributor to PassageMaker on marine electronics, Hummel cruises Pacific Northwest waters in an 80-foot long-range trawler. Next stop: The South Pacific.

The TrawlerFest boat show and seminar series happens at the Riviera Beach Municipal Marina Tuesday through Sunday, Jan. 26-31. The boat show runs Thursday through Sunday, Jan. 28-31, and includes booths displaying marine products and services. For information about TrawlerFest-Riviera Beach, call 954.703.4789 or send an email to [email protected].
The best value is to purchase a VIP pass which allows entry into any and all of the seminars (except the diesel and “Hands-On Boat Handling” seminars) for a set price, which also includes admission to the show and evening social events. For example, you could attend three of the four seminars mentioned above (two conflict) as well as have a choice of several others over the six-day event.
