
CruiserPort University brings a popular couple’s seminar called “Navigation for Husbands & Wives” to the Newport International Boat Show. The two-hour class, held at the Newport Blues Cafe, is designed to build confidence and encourage teamwork.
This mini-course, scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16, is for new boaters or more experienced boaters seeking a primer on latest technology. Instructor Bob Sweet is a senior navigator and author of The Weekend Navigator, GPS for Mariners, Using GPS, Using GPS with Charts and consultant to OceanGrafix.
Sweet’s seminar is a comprehensive “quick start” guide to navigation, teaching essential skills from planning a cruise, navigating under way and crosschecking your position. He will demonstrate how to use paper charts with your electronics in a complementary way and tricks on how to deal with tides and currents.
Sweet’s navigation seminar is one of eight seminars that can be purchased individually for $60 or you can buy a VIP pass, which let’s you attend all eight at a substantial savings. Two additional seminars, Nigel Calder’s “Diesel Engines: Maintenance & Troubleshooting” and “Troubleshooting Marine Electrical Systems” are eight-hour classes and are not included in the VIP pass.
