The Madeira Beach City Commission passed an anti-anchoring ordinance on Tuesday, but it does not apply to transient cruisers, only to people with boats not capable of getting underway.
Last week we wrote about how the City was considering a definition of “liveaboard” that would have included most of us. In the end the City Commission went with the definition under state law, which favors bonafide cruisers.
One Facebook commenter with local knowledge of Madeira Beach waters estimated that about 30 percent of vessels anchored there were incapable of moving under their own power. These presumably were the boats that were most annoying to waterfront property owners whose complaints prompted the ordinance.
