In 2024, the purse seiner Western Flyer motored into her original homeport of Monterey, Calif., for the first time in 75 years. The boat, memorialized in the Nobel Prize-winning literature of John Steinbeck, is now the subject of an award-winning short film.

The Western Flyer with Nick Offerman, narrated by the Emmy-winning actor and comedian, covers the boat’s rebirth and restoration, as well as her new mission as a floating science lab dedicated to marine conservation.

The film is just under 10 minutes. It was awarded the silver prize in the Sustainability, Environment & Climate category at the Fourth Annual Anthem Awards. It covers the Flyer’s time with Steinbeck on the Sea of Cortez, how she was lost to history for decades, and how, by happenstance, she became “like a phoenix risen from the depths” after sinking twice. YouTube: @WesternFlyerFoundationChannel
