A routine safety inspection on New York’s East River has resulted in gun charges against Maryland’s biggest car dealer, according to multiple news reports.
Annapolis resident Jacob “Jack” Antwerpen, his wife and daughter were on board his 110-foot motor yacht, named YES, on the way to Boston July 27 when the Coast Guard stopped the boat. “Yes” is the slogan for Antwerpen’s multiple car dealerships, as anyone who watches Baltimore-area television can tell you.
According to news reports, Antwerpen admitted he had the guns, prompting the Coast Guard detail to summon the New York Police Department’s Harbor Unit. Police seized a revolver, rifle and two shotguns from what was described as a “locked vault.”
The New York Post quoted a police spokesman as saying Antwerpen had an expired carry permit. Even the least serious firearms possession charge, a misdemeanor, carries a penalty of up to a year in jail. Police detained Anterpen, issued him a ticket to appear and then released him.
“He was a gentleman, and acknowledged that there were firearms on board, and acknowledged that they were his firearms,” The Baltimore Sun newspaper quoted the spokesman as saying.
