Kahlenberg Air Horns Come Down In Size There is an informal tradition at boat shows, where at the close of the last day of the show, when its time to break down the exhibits and untie the boats, everyone blows their boats horns. It is a fun thing we all enjoy after days of talking to people walking the docks. At the fall Newport show some years back, my former trawler, Growler, was on hand representing the latest example of the Zimmerman 36. Steve Zimmerman was on board to show the boat and explain its value to potential buyers intrigued by the idea of a Downeast-style cruising boat. At the close of the show when the noisy bellow of horns began, Steve went to the helm and pushed the horn button. Nothing. The horn just clicked. Over the course of owning Growler I replaced that horn three times, finally removing it altogether, and I relied on a handheld air horn I kept at the helm. Lobster boats can be wet when the conditions are just so, and I guess it wasnt a horn-friendly platform.
Inflatable boats come in all sorts of configurations and sizes. Some are light, easily transportable, and when deflated can be stowed in a space a

Stories about marine diesel engine longevity are legion and it seems to be that the harder they are worked, the longer they last. While that
Dirty air filters are good, as are dirty fuel filters. To a point that is. Most cruisers fixate on the cleanliness of filters, especially fuel
Image Gallery is disabled at this time. Boats stink. Really, they do, and the primary reason is that they must be watertight. Ventilation is limited on board, and its virtually nonexistent aboard a boat that is unoccupied. Any odors that make their way into a boat or are generated on board tend to stay there and become concentrated.
I recently accompanied a client for a sea trial aboard a 44-foot trawler they were considering purchasing. As sea trials go, with a few exceptions

Island time is great, except in an emergency. This medevac service is for boaters who need help fast.

Black streaks, yellow mustaches and rust all require different solutions to keep a boat looking clean.

A Down East icon provides inspiration for this gentlemanly cruiser.

We follow the path of explorers who ran the Northwest Passage over a century ago, but our journey is a lot more fun

We can spend years planning for a bucket-list trip and then life gets in the way. Go now.

Karly and Evan Nietzel—aka YouTube’s @Navigating Nietzels—tailored their careers for remote work after buying a trawler, moving onboard and completing the Great Loop. Along with their pup, Ripley, they’re just getting started.

This aluminum vessel’s throwback design belies its modern systems, all installed for a Great Loop cruise.

The three-stateroom, semidisplacement model has a range of power options and a low air draft.

A solar-power system on our classic trawler lets us spend time moored or anchored with more than enough juice to meet our energy needs.
