First of all, about that headline: One dictionary defines “scuttlebutt” as an early 19th century term (denoting a water butt on the deck of a ship, providing drinking water): from scuttled butt . Sailors would traditionally exchange gossip when they gathered at the scuttlebutt for a drink of water.

With that out of the way, let us note that a perennially popular page on this website is a very old story on do-it-yourself watermaking systems. With that in mind we decided to launch a new seminar at TrawlerFest in Bremerton:

Watermaker: Build It, Buy It, Use It

With Mike Beemer

2-4 p.m., Wednesday, May 2 at the Kitsap Conference Center at Bremerton Harborside

When Joshua Slocum’s sailed Spray around the world, one thing he really missed was a fresh water bath. Many modern vessel’s are equipped with water-makers, and there are many great options available. This course will take you through the theory of water-making, options that are available, why they are so expensive, and maintenance of these systems. We will also discuss options and resources for the DIY boat owner wanting to save some money by building their own system.

Beemer chairs the Marine Technology Department of Skagit Valley College in Anacortes, and he is also lead presenter for the TrawlerFest signature seminar
“Everything You Need To Know About Diesel Engines.”

You can take the watermaker seminar and most of the others (the diesel course is one exception) for fixed prices with a four- or six-day VIP Pass, which gives you access their choice of attending any seminar. The cost is $399 for a four-day VIP pass and $499 for the six-day pass. Visit our ticketing site and do some math. You’ll see how being a VIP maximizes your seminar buying power.
