This an all day course about your diesel propulsion engine. Having your Diesel engine fail while underway can ruin your day. Worse, it could put you and your crew in a dangerous position. In general, marine diesel engines are incredibly reliable. They just to need, air, fuel, and water for cooling. You could add electrical power for starting, and you have covered the range of needs for a diesel engine. Most engine problems are due to fuel issues or keeping the engine cool. Using the Marine Tech Centers diesel engine lab, we will work with live diesel engines running where you can walk around the engine and see the different systems. You can look at the injectors and even learn to bleed the engine before starting.

Waves / Sea, and How they Impact Your Vessel

Everything you really need to know about seas, and how to interpret seastate forecasts. Topics include: Define wave height and interval (period); Explore the concept of “apparent wave interval”; Why waves develop; Discuss the importance of an accurate wind forecast; How waves dissipate energy; How fast waves propagate.

Managing Power

There are many new choices for generating and managing power on your boat – solar cells, fuel cells, high-output alternators and of course – a genset. Did you know a genset on your boat is the most expensive power you can buy?
Our needs for power on our boats have became higher. Computers, tablets and iPhone chargers, microwave ovens, music systems and even the Instant Pot may be expected to run off a modern boat’s electrical system and many vessels don’t have a “balanced electrical system” that performs properly, has reliability, and is designed to last. This course is designed to help you understand how to design, check, maintain, and upgrade your electrical system to match the power requirements on your boat.
First, we will take a look at the typical power demands a modern electrical system supports.
Do you know how much your microwave draws from your inverter and storage system? We will total up the electrical draw different systems require. Next, we will cover the size of your power storage system, and how to monitor and keep it charged. We then will wrap up the seminar by providing other ways to produce energy and their cost: high-output alternators & battery chargers, solar options & controllers, new fuel cells, and even wind energy. After taking this course, you will become the ‘master’ of the energy equation onboard your cruising vessel.
Advanced Anchoring

Anchoring may be considered more of an art than a science. You may never fully understand anchoring, just get better at it. At the heart of anchoring is the anchor itself. Some work well in certain sea beds only to fail in others. We’ll explore which anchors you should carry and how to deploy them based on your type of boating. The anchor is just part of a system where the weakest link is what does you in. We’ll talk about that. And, we’ll talk about techniques, choosing your place for anchoring, and setting the anchor. Then, we’ll talk about getting your anchor back as they do cost a lot.
There are times that challenge your anchoring and conditions that favor deploying two anchors. We’ll explain the advantages and disadvantages of several approaches to multiple anchors. Storm conditions challenge the anchors, boat and crew so we’ll talk about controlling the anchor and dealing with shocks caused by waves.

We’ll talk about close quarters maneuvering which is one of the primary stressors for most boaters. That includes departing, docking, and turning and coming close to other boats and fixed objects. Trawler Buying Tips

Even when it goes well, buying a boat can be a stressful process. The idea behind this three-hour seminar is to arm buyers with the information they need to minimize frustration and unnecessary expense. Five “team teach” instructors look at the challenges of boat buying from unique perspectives. This seminar has saved untold thousands of dollars for participants who avoided making costly mistakes over the past five years.
The theme of the first buying tip is “physics & psychology,” leading off with the first decision a prospective buyer of a cruising boat must make, with Jeff Merrill, CYBA renown Trawler Specialist. Enter veteran boatbuilders Sam Devlin of Devlin Boat Design to explain boat construction and how to discern between different materials.

What’s Up With Radar and AIS

AIS is relatively new and radar has come a long way. We’ll talk about both. They truly complement each other and work well together.
The digital world has totally changed radar. All new radar scanners are a magnitude better than their old CRT cousins. The digital processors enhance the resolution of targets and vesting reduce unwanted clutter.
A game changer is solid-state radar. Instead of using a vacuum tube to emit high-power short-pulses, these radars use long, complex pulses or continuous transmission at low power to place the same energy on the target.
The stability afforded by the solid state, and very sophisticated processing allows these new radar scanners to determine who is getting closer and highlight just those, called Doppler processing.
If you are adding radar or planning to upgrade, you’ll benefit from know what to look for. If you have one, understanding how they “think” will help you interpret what they are telling you. Conventional digital pulse radar scanners are still a valid solution, especially for really distant targets. We’ll explore what to look for and how to use them.
AIS is rapidly becoming an essential tool to have on your boat. You should have at least an AIS receiver, if not a transponder. The transponder tells others of your presence, but there are some issues. New Class B transponders are much better and you might want to consider an upgrade. We’ll explain why.
Using Radar and AIS together, and with your Chartplotter, is an ultimate safety tool and we’ll explain how best to use them.
The Great Loop: How To Prepare, What To Expect

As you know, boaters who circumnavigate the East Coast of U.S., using the Hudson River, Erie Canal, Great Lakes, Mississippi River and Intracoastal Waterway are called “Loopers” for having completed “The Great Loop.” Kim Russo, executive director of the America’s Great Loop Cruisers’ Association, will give a detailed briefing with plenty of time to answer questions. Advanced Boat Handling

Okay, you know the basics but boating involves lots of variables. Varying wind, current, and sea conditions mean you must adapt on the fly. There are an infinite number of combinations, so you need to know the principles, not just some canned solutions.
Docking is then more of a challenge and the proper use of engines and lines makes all the difference. As a cruising boater, you will experience all sorts of harbors and docking configurations and must be able to master the situation in front of you. Many boaters have twin engines. Handling in close quarters is different from those with a single engine. Instead of the wheel, you will make extensive use of the engines to steer the boat. Extensive use of lines makes the difference in many situations. And, who should be handling the lines and who should be at the helm? This is a team effort.
Operating in open water is driven by sea conditions and you need to know what to do and when to be comfortable and safe in your journey. As the seas build, you need to know which way to go and how to maintain control of your boat.
We’ll explore all of these topics together and provide you with the boat’s perspective to help you deal with challenges that might arise.

BIO: Karl is a Charter Captain, Boat Broker and Flotilla Leader at Seattle Yachts. He holds a United States Coast Guard 100 Ton Master’s License with Sail and Tow endorsements. For the last 20 years, he has cruised extensively in the San Juan Islands, Canadian Gulf Islands, the Canadian Coast, and Alaska.
Karl holds a B.S. in Environmental Science/ Toxicology and an A.A.S. in Ecology and Environmental Technology. He also holds current certifications for CPR and Outdoor Emergency Care.
In the 2017 Race to Alaska, Karl became the first person to paddle the 750 mile race course on a Stand Up Paddleboard, completing the race in under two weeks. In 2022 he will paddle non-assisted 2,000 miles of the Northwest Passage.

- From I-5, take Exit #230 (Hwy 20 West)
- Continue Hwy 20 West, proceed straight through Hwy 20 Spur light (sign “Anacortes – San Juan Ferry”) (12.0 miles)
- Turn right at light onto R Avenue (2.7 miles)
- Continue around curves (street becomes Q Avenue )
- Cross the light at 17th Street
- Cap Sante Marina is on the right.
