Three seminars at TrawlerFest in Stuart are designed to assess risk and avoid disaster but also to cope with emergencies that sometimes happen despite precautions.

Safety & Survival at Sea features Mario Vittone and Michael Carr, two noted experts from military backgrounds. Vittone is a retired U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer, whose career choice lead him to become a national expert on immersion hypothermia, drowning, sea survival, and safety at sea. Michael Carr is a veteran boat handler and weather expert, who, after graduating from the Coast Guard Academy, served in the Coast Guard, Merchant Marines and Army. Attendees will receive a certificate of completion.
Dr. Jim Chimiak of DAN Medical services presents Medical Preparedness and First Aid for Boaters. Chimiak will conduct an open discussion on boater safety resources and an approach to basic medical care, including case reviews that detail the initial steps in dealing with medical emergencies in remote locations. Chimiak is an Annapolis graduate, an avid coastal boater, has a great deal of marine medicine experience and is a practicing surgeon. Attendees will receive a certificate of completion.

Survival Lessons from Sea Disasters is presented by author Michael Tougias, who has conducted extensive research involving people who have survived sea disasters and obstacles that most of us shudder to think about. He shares what he has learned about decision-making under pressure from researching his four national bestsellers: “Overboard!,” “Ten Hours Until Dawn,” “Fatal Forecast,” “A Storm Too Soon” and “The Finest Hours.” Walt Disney Pictures has released the movie version of “The Finest Hours” to the big screen. Tougias demonstrates how survivors channeled and managed their energy into proactive life-saving decisions. Practical lessons to avoid mistakes while boating are mixed with inspirational tips for handling adversity.
