For Scott and Mary Flanders, TrawlerFest-Stuart marked an epiphany a decade ago. It not only led this adventurous couple to Nordhavn but prompted them to begin the process of early retirement and their eventual escape.
Now they are speaking at TrawlerFest-Baltimore in September to share the lessons they’ve learned and inspire the next generation. The Flanders will speak 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25 at the Harborview Marine Center in Baltimore.

After delivery of Nordhavn 46 Egret in August, 2001, the Flanders spent 2½ years coastal cruising the east coast of North America, crossed the Atlantic and spent 2½ years in the Mediterranean. Departing the Mediterranean to the Canary Islands, Egret embarked on a 4½ year circumnavigation passing below the five Great Southern Ocean Capes beginning with Cape Horn, the first five-cape circumnavigation ever for a small powerboat.
Since returning to the Canary Islands, Egret returned to the Mediterranean then re-crossed the Atlantic to North America and more recently Egret wintered in Isafjordur, Iceland and returned this year via Greenland, Labrador, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and currently en route to Baltimore.
The Flanders have been full time liveaboards for these past years with no land base. The text and photographs are written to be inspirational and informative with excellent technical training tips. Egret, which is now for sale, will be docked at the marina and available for inspection.
