So far we have promoted TrawlerFest-Anacortes with previews of our Alaska program. Let’s shift focus and instead take a left as we exit Puget Sound into the Pacific. Let’s head southbound, past California to the Baja Peninsula and the otherworldly Sea of Cortez. We’ve got that covered, too.
We’ve got two seminars that can be taken together or separately. Together makes sense. Both happen on Wednesday, May 18 at venues near TrawerFest’s ground zero, the Cap Sante Marina.
The first happens 10:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: “California Southbound” with Mark Bunzel. The Bunzel name should be familiar to you. He’s the premier publisher of cruising guides for the Pacific Northwest and Southeast Alaska. As it happens, he knows something about going in the other direction as well. And unless you’re shipping your boat from Vancouver to Ensenada, Mexico, you’ve got to transit the coast of California before you can enjoy the “magical reality” of cruising Mexico.

After a quick lunch, we present “Cruising Baja and the Sea of Cortez” with Capt. Patty Rains, veteran delivery skipper and author of Mexico Boating Guide and Cruising Ports: the Central American Route nautical guidebooks.
Rains promises to reveal the five most reliable stops for port clearance, diesel, sound night’s sleep and weather refuge on Baja’s Pacific Coast. These stops are good both southbound and for “bashing” back up Baja. She’ll also talk about three other fun stops for fishing, island hiking and whale watching.
Then Rains takes attendees around Los Cabos and into the spectacular Sea of Cortez for a close look at the very best winter cruising circuits (marinas, anchorages, fuel docks, boat yards) and summer circuits (hurricane holes, fishing maps) and where these circuits overlap. She’ll also touch briefly on commuter cruising for those who may plan to leave the boat down there and fly back and forth for a while.

The TrawlerFest boat show and seminar series happens at the Cap Sante Marina Tuesday through Saturday, May 17-21. The boat show runs Thursday through Saturday, May 19-21, and includes booths displaying marine products and services.
A $399 VIP pass offers the best value at TrawlerFest because it allows entry into any and all of the seminars (except “Diesel Engines” and “Boat Handling” seminars) for a set price and also includes admission to the show and evening social events.
